VStar 950

The VStar 950 is Star’s latest introduction to the VStar lineup. Introduced for the 2009 model year, this motorcycle fills a previous gap in the lineup and will appeal to both new and experienced riders.  The VStar 950 won the prestigious “Metric of the Year” award in 2009 from V-Twin® Magazine, and the reviews for this motorcycle have been overwhelmingly positive.  The 950 is an update to classic cruiser styling with a low, streamlined, swept look that we really like, but there is a lot to like about this cycle besides its looks.  Start with a fuel injected V-Twin that delivers about 47 mpg on non-premium fuel, yet still has best-in-class acceleration in the midrange class.  A smooth 5 speed transmission and belt drive add to the package. At 613 pounds, it is fairly light for its class but substantial enough that you won’t get blown around on the highway.

The main control center on the 950 is on the tank. It features a speedometer, fuel level warning  light, oil level warning light, and odometer with two trip meter functions, fuel trip meter, and clock display.  The LCD display illumination can be adjusted using a right side handlebar switch.  This is definitely a step up from the gauges and lights on the 650 and has a nice look. See the picture below.

Seat height is just 26.5 inches, making this motorcycle an ideal choice for vertically challenged riders. It was described in a couple reviews that you have a feel of being in the bike, vs. on it when riding this machine.  We need more reports on overall comfort from taller riders, so if anyone 6 feet and over can share their riding experience on this cycle, we will be glad to publish the opinions.  ( see link at left send email).

There is some opinion that the 650 may be phased out in favor of the 950. We will have to wait and see. But with a price point WELL under 10,000 (8300 for the 950, 9400 for the Tourer), Yamaha might go this route.   Overall, we predict that this motorcycle will have a good future, and will attract many riders who don’t want to deal with the ‘big iron’ but want plenty of performance.
