The VStar 650 comes in three different packages, Custom, Classic, and Silverado. This is a good entry level motorcycle for some and you are less likely to outgrow it. The cycle is heavy enough (583 for the Silverado) that you won’t get blown around terribly on the highway.. The 650 cruises nicely at 70 to 75 and will easily run faster than that, although without a sixth gear it seems to be revving a little high at higher speeds. The 4.2 gallon tank and 45-50 miles per gallon should easily get you 150 miles before a pit stop, and you will probably be ready for a break by then anyway.
The 650 is air cooled and runs on 2 28mm Mikuni® CV carburetors, vs. fuel injection. You will probably want to use the choke on a cold engine. The cycle’s seat is only about 27 inches high, which allows shorter riders to easily plant both feet on the ground. The 650 has a nice ride and a smooth feel. The stock exhaust is just a little throaty but won’t turn any heads. Many people say the motorcycle looks much bigger than a 650, often mistaking it for an 1100 or larger. There is plenty of chrome that makes this looks like a much more expensive motorcycle. There are other big bike touches as well, like floorboards, heel/toe shifter, self canceling turn signals, and shaft drive, that will make you like the 650. Overall, if you are looking for a nice entry level priced motorcycle that you can take out on the highway and do some touring, the VStar 650 is definitely worth a test ride.
There are lots of available aftermarket parts, both in the performance and style categories, that will allow you to personalize your 650. Click on the Motorcycle Superstore or Bike Bandit links at the left to see the selection.
